Mitchell "Mitch" Ayres (* 24. Dezember 1909; + 05. September 1969) war ein US-amerikanischer Komponist und Arrangeur. Er ist vor allem für seine langjährige Arbeit mit Perry Como in Radio, Schallplatten und Fernsehen sowie als musikalischer Dirigent für The Hollywood Palace bekannt.
Geboren als Mitchell Agress in Milwaukee/Wisconsin besuchte er die Columbia University mit dem Hauptfach Sport, begann aber bereits während seines Columbia-Studiums professionell an der Brooklyn Academy of Music aufzutreten. Nach seinem Abschluss wurde Ayres Violinist im Roxy Theater Orchestra; Später wechselte er in die gleiche Position beim St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Weil er nach New York zurückkehren wollte, verließ Ayres die klassische Musik und nahm einen Job bei Jimmy Carrs Orchester an. Ayres arbeitete später mit Abe Lyman und Jack Little, bekannt als Little Jack Little.
1937, nachdem sie einige Jahre in Littles Band gearbeitet hatten, beschlossen Ayres und einige der anderen Musiker, sich zu trennen und ihre eigene Band zu gründen. Die Musiker waren bei der Planung ihres Unternehmens äußerst geschäftstüchtig. Die Band wurde wie eine Firma behandelt, in der jedes Mitglied eine gleiche Anzahl von Aktien in der neuen Band hatte. Der Orchesterleiter wurde durch Wahl bestimmt, und es war Ayres, der zum Leiter des Orchesters gewählt wurde. Die Mitglieder, die sich Fashions in Music nannten und den Song “You Go to My Head“ als Thema wählten, arbeiteten an Arrangements und entwickelten ihren eigenen Stil, während sie auf ihr erstes Engagement warteten. Es dauerte einige Zeit, aber das Orchester bekam seinen ersten Job im Hotel St. George in Brooklyn. Der ursprüngliche Vertrag mit dem Hotel sah vor, dass die Band dort vier Wochen lang spielen sollte; ihr Aufenthalt dauerte sieben Monate.
Fashions in Music erhielt dann ihren ersten Plattenvertrag für “Row, Row, Row“, der kurz nach seiner Veröffentlichung 50.000 Mal verkauft wurde. Radiosender begannen, die Platte zu spielen, und das Orchester war für Auftritte im ganzen Land gefragt. 1939 bot Bluebird Records der Band einen ersten Einjahresvertrag an; das Arrangement dauerte bis 1942. Währenddessen fungierte das Orchester weiterhin als Unternehmen, wobei die Musikeraktionäre Geschäfte diskutierten und darüber abstimmten. Bis 1940 hatte das Orchester seine eigene Show auf CBS Radio. Ayres und die Band traten in drei Filmen der 1940 er Jahre auf: “Swingtime Johnny“, “Moonlight and Cactus“ und “Lady, Let's Dance“.

“How High the Moon“ ist der Titel eines Jazz-Standards (komponiert von Morgan Lewis mit einem Text von Nancy Hamilton), das als Teil der Broadway-Revue “Two for the Show“ 1940 aufgeführt wurde und sich später verselbständigt hat.
Entstehungsgeschichte
Die Revue “Two for the Show“ handelt in London während des Krieges und beinhaltete insgesamt 13 Musikstücke und Tanzlieder, Alfred Drake spielte die Hauptrolle. Das Musical brachte es im Booth Theatre zwischen dem 08. Februar 1940 und 25. Mai 1940 auf 124 Aufführungen. “How High the Moon“ erschien als fünfter von 8 Songs im ersten Akt, im zweiten Akt gab es noch 5 weitere Stücke. Er wird von 8 Personen in Abendkleidung auf einer Londoner Straße gesungen. William Morgan Lewis schrieb die Musik als langsame Ballade in der A-B'-A-B"-Form, dabei nutzte er eine absteigende Akkordfolge. Wegen seiner komplexen und interessanten Akkordfolgen gab es den Song später auch in mehreren Bebop-Versionen, so dass er seither mit höherem Tempo vorgetragen wird. Es blieb das einzige Jazzstandard, das Lewis geschrieben hatte. Nancy Hamiltons Text unterstützt eigentlich auch die heutige schnelle Version. Erzählt wird die Geschichte einer unerreichbaren Liebe, so weit entfernt wie der Mond. Beide Autoren gehören nicht zu den professionellen Komponisten, für sie sind jeweils lediglich 19 Titel bei der ASCAP registriert. “How High the Moon“ hob sich von den anderen Liedern der Revue deutlich ab und erschien deshalb in zahlreichen Versionen.

Benny Goodmans Original mit Sängerin Helen Forrest entstand am 07. Februar 1940 in New York, also noch am Tag vor der Premiere des Musicals. Das hervorstechende Piano-Solo stammt von Wally Krauss. Die weitere Besetzung bestand aus Toots Mondello und Buff Estes (Alt-Saxophon), Buss Bassey (Tenorsaxophon), Irving Goodman, Ziggy Elman und Jimmy Maxwell (Trompete), Red Ballard, Ted Vesely und Vernon Brown (Posaune). Die Single “How High the Moon“/“The Fable of the Rose“ (Columbia 35391) gelangte nach ihrer Veröffentlichung im Februar 1940 bis auf # 6 der US-Hitparade.

Es gibt mindestens 94 Cover-Versionen, die die stilübergreifende Verwendbarkeit des Titels unterstreichen. Neben Jazzaufnahmen gibt es Popversionen, eine Soul- und eine Discofassung. Mitchell Ayres and his Fashions in Music (mit Mary Ann Mercer, Gesang; Aufnahmedatum: 08. Februar 1940, also einen Tag nach der Aufnahme von Benny Goodman) erreichten mit ihrer ersten Cover-Version # 18 der Hitparade.
Freddie Rich & Orchestra mit Rosemary Calvin nahmen das Stück am 14. Februar 1940 auf, Harry James & Dick Haymes (im Bostoner Southland Café) am 19. März 1940. Ella Fitzgerald singt ihn mit Dizzy Gillespies Orchester live in der ausverkauften Carnegie Hall am 29. September 1947, ihre erste Plattenversion stammt vom 20. Dezember 1947 mit den Daydreamers. Sie hat den Song über 15 Mal mit ihrem typischen Scat-Gesang aufgenommen. Django Reinhardt nahm ihn mit seinen Improvisationen als Gitarrist der Jazz Club Mystery Hot Band am 25. Januar 1945 in Paris auf.
Lionel Hampton folgte am 02. April 1947, Goodman erneut als Goodman Septet am 07. April 1947, Stan Kentons Instrumentalversion stammt vom 21. Dezember 1947.
Der noch unbekannte Dave Brubeck suchte sich den Song aus, um ihn mit seinem gerade gegründeten Oktett im Jahre 1948 für eine Vorspielprobe bei der NBC zu präsentieren. Duke Ellington (mit Ben Webster) führte ihn live in der Carnegie Hall am 13. November 1948 auf. Das Charlie Parker Quintet verewigte ihn am 18. Dezember 1948, Erroll Garner am 07. Oktober 1950.
Die Fassung des Duos Les Paul/Mary Ford, eine der ersten Overdub-Aufnahmen der Musikgeschichte, blieb neun Wochen auf # 1. Gitarrist Les Paul, der sich auch mit Gitarrenkonstruktion (die Gibson Les Paul ist nach ihm benannt) und Aufnahmetechnik befasste, entwickelte ein Nachhallverfahren (Delay), das auf seiner am 04. Januar 1951 zuhause eingespielten Aufnahme erstmals zu hören ist und seitdem zu den üblichen Soundeffekten der Aufnahmetechnik gehört.
Er legte insgesamt acht identische Tracks mit zeitlicher Verzögerung übereinander, wobei er eine Degeneration der Qualität in Kauf nehmen musste. Pauls Version kam am 23. März 1951 in die Hitparade, wo sie 25 Wochen verweilte. Kein anderes Duett verharrte für 9 Wochen auf dem # 1 der US-Charts. Seine Version erreichte auch als erste Aufnahme eines weißen Interpreten # 1 der Rhythm & Blues-Hitparade. Les Pauls Version verkaufte 1,5 Millionen Exemplare und ist damit die erfolgreichste Version von “How High the Moon“. Sarah Vaughn nahm den Titel zwischen dem 25. und 27. Oktober 1955 auf, Sonny Stitt folgte am 01. August 1958. Eine denkwürdige Aufnahme stammt von Ella Fitzgerald, als sie ihn in der Berliner Deutschlandhalle am 13. Februar 1960 präsentierte (zu finden auf der LP “Ella in Berlin“; 1960), Marvin Gaye brachte im Juni 1961 eine Soulfassung heraus, die Disco-Version von Gloria Gaynor (November 1975) war kein großer Hit für sie.
Die Abfolge der Akkorde bilden das Akkordgerüst für Charlie Parkers Komposition “Ornithology“. Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton und andere übernahmen “Ornithology“ in ihr Solo bei der Interpretation von “How High the Moon“. Miles Davis' Komposition Solar basiert auf Teilen der Akkordstrukturen von “How High the Moon“.

Studioarbeit und Como
Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann Ayres für Vokalgruppen wie The Andrews Sisters zu dirigieren. Er begann auch für Columbia Records als musikalischer Leiter zu arbeiten und arbeitete mit Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Pearl Bailey und anderen, die bei dem Plattenlabel unter Vertrag standen, darunter Doris Day und Dinah Shore.
Mitchell Ayres' erste Verbindung mit Perry Como kam 1944, als er gebeten wurde, eine Demoaufnahme einer Radiosendung mit Como als Moderator zu dirigieren.
Das Programm wurde zum “Chesterfield Supper Club“. Ayres und Como teilten die Begeisterung für Golf und spielten oft zusammen. 1948 bot Como Ayres die Stelle als Dirigent seiner “Supper Club“-Sendungen an, während die beiden Golf spielten. Ayres und sein Orchester begannen auch mit Como für RCA Victor aufzunehmen; Comos Aussprache und Phrasierung auf den Aufnahmen von “Kol Nidrei“ und “Eli, Eli“ wurden von einem Mitglied von Ayres' Orchester gelehrt, der der Sohn eines Rabbiners war. Als der “Chesterfield Supper Club“ Ende 1948 ins Fernsehen wechselte, waren Ayres und sein Orchester Teil der Besetzung. Ayres und sein Orchester blieben bei Como in seiner CBS-Fernsehshow und wechselten sowohl für die “Perry Como Show“ als auch für Perry Comos “Kraft Music Hall“ zu NBC. Während sowohl Ayres als auch Como bei CBS arbeiteten, arbeiteten Ayres und sein Orchester auch am Top Tunes-Programm des Fernsehens, das ein Sommerersatz für Comos Fernsehshow war. Sie waren bis 1964 Stammgäste in Comos Programmen.
Im Jahr 1963, nach fast 20 Jahren einer regelmäßig stattfindenden Radio- oder Fernsehsendung, war sich Perry Como nicht sicher, ob er weiterhin regelmäßige Fernsehauftritte haben würde. Seine Unsicherheit veranlasste Ayres, ein Angebot anzunehmen, Dirigent für eine neue Fernsehshow zu werden, “The Hollywood Palace“, die im Januar 1964 uraufgeführt wurde. Für seine musikalische Arbeit an der Show wurde er 1966 und 1968 für einen Emmy Award nominiert. Zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes arbeitete Ayres für die Fernsehsendung.
Ayres wurde am 05. September 1969 beim Überqueren einer Straße in Winchester/Nevada von einem Auto angefahren und getötet. Er war in der Gegend von Las Vegas und arbeitete als musikalischer Leiter für Connie Francis' Show im neu eröffneten Landmark Hotel. Er hinterließ seine Frau Georgianna, einen Sohn, Lawrence, und eine Tochter, Judith. Eine Woche nach dem Tod ihres Mannes starb Georgianna Ayres an einem Herzinfarkt. Ayres und seine Frau sind im Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale begraben.

Mitchell "Mitch" Ayres (* 24. Dezember 1909; + 05. September 1969) war ein US-amerikanischer Komponist und Arrangeur. Er ist vor allem für seine langjährige Arbeit mit Perry Como in Radio, Schallplatten und Fernsehen sowie als musikalischer Dirigent für The Hollywood Palace bekannt.
Geboren als Mitchell Agress in Milwaukee/Wisconsin besuchte er die Columbia University mit dem Hauptfach Sport, begann aber bereits während seines Columbia-Studiums professionell an der Brooklyn Academy of Music aufzutreten. Nach seinem Abschluss wurde Ayres Violinist im Roxy Theater Orchestra; Später wechselte er in die gleiche Position beim St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Weil er nach New York zurückkehren wollte, verließ Ayres die klassische Musik und nahm einen Job bei Jimmy Carrs Orchester an. Ayres arbeitete später mit Abe Lyman und Jack Little, bekannt als Little Jack Little.
1937, nachdem sie einige Jahre in Littles Band gearbeitet hatten, beschlossen Ayres und einige der anderen Musiker, sich zu trennen und ihre eigene Band zu gründen. Die Musiker waren bei der Planung ihres Unternehmens äußerst geschäftstüchtig. Die Band wurde wie eine Firma behandelt, in der jedes Mitglied eine gleiche Anzahl von Aktien in der neuen Band hatte. Der Orchesterleiter wurde durch Wahl bestimmt, und es war Ayres, der zum Leiter des Orchesters gewählt wurde. Die Mitglieder, die sich Fashions in Music nannten und den Song “You Go to My Head“ als Thema wählten, arbeiteten an Arrangements und entwickelten ihren eigenen Stil, während sie auf ihr erstes Engagement warteten. Es dauerte einige Zeit, aber das Orchester bekam seinen ersten Job im Hotel St. George in Brooklyn. Der ursprüngliche Vertrag mit dem Hotel sah vor, dass die Band dort vier Wochen lang spielen sollte; ihr Aufenthalt dauerte sieben Monate.
Fashions in Music erhielt dann ihren ersten Plattenvertrag für “Row, Row, Row“, der kurz nach seiner Veröffentlichung 50.000 Mal verkauft wurde. Radiosender begannen, die Platte zu spielen, und das Orchester war für Auftritte im ganzen Land gefragt. 1939 bot Bluebird Records der Band einen ersten Einjahresvertrag an; das Arrangement dauerte bis 1942. Währenddessen fungierte das Orchester weiterhin als Unternehmen, wobei die Musikeraktionäre Geschäfte diskutierten und darüber abstimmten. Bis 1940 hatte das Orchester seine eigene Show auf CBS Radio. Ayres und die Band traten in drei Filmen der 1940 er Jahre auf: “Swingtime Johnny“, “Moonlight and Cactus“ und “Lady, Let's Dance“.

“How High the Moon“ ist der Titel eines Jazz-Standards (komponiert von Morgan Lewis mit einem Text von Nancy Hamilton), das als Teil der Broadway-Revue “Two for the Show“ 1940 aufgeführt wurde und sich später verselbständigt hat.
Entstehungsgeschichte
Die Revue “Two for the Show“ handelt in London während des Krieges und beinhaltete insgesamt 13 Musikstücke und Tanzlieder, Alfred Drake spielte die Hauptrolle. Das Musical brachte es im Booth Theatre zwischen dem 08. Februar 1940 und 25. Mai 1940 auf 124 Aufführungen. “How High the Moon“ erschien als fünfter von 8 Songs im ersten Akt, im zweiten Akt gab es noch 5 weitere Stücke. Er wird von 8 Personen in Abendkleidung auf einer Londoner Straße gesungen. William Morgan Lewis schrieb die Musik als langsame Ballade in der A-B'-A-B"-Form, dabei nutzte er eine absteigende Akkordfolge. Wegen seiner komplexen und interessanten Akkordfolgen gab es den Song später auch in mehreren Bebop-Versionen, so dass er seither mit höherem Tempo vorgetragen wird. Es blieb das einzige Jazzstandard, das Lewis geschrieben hatte. Nancy Hamiltons Text unterstützt eigentlich auch die heutige schnelle Version. Erzählt wird die Geschichte einer unerreichbaren Liebe, so weit entfernt wie der Mond. Beide Autoren gehören nicht zu den professionellen Komponisten, für sie sind jeweils lediglich 19 Titel bei der ASCAP registriert. “How High the Moon“ hob sich von den anderen Liedern der Revue deutlich ab und erschien deshalb in zahlreichen Versionen.

Benny Goodmans Original mit Sängerin Helen Forrest entstand am 07. Februar 1940 in New York, also noch am Tag vor der Premiere des Musicals. Das hervorstechende Piano-Solo stammt von Wally Krauss. Die weitere Besetzung bestand aus Toots Mondello und Buff Estes (Alt-Saxophon), Buss Bassey (Tenorsaxophon), Irving Goodman, Ziggy Elman und Jimmy Maxwell (Trompete), Red Ballard, Ted Vesely und Vernon Brown (Posaune). Die Single “How High the Moon“/“The Fable of the Rose“ (Columbia 35391) gelangte nach ihrer Veröffentlichung im Februar 1940 bis auf # 6 der US-Hitparade.
Wichtige Cover-Versionen
Es gibt mindestens 94 Cover-Versionen, die die stilübergreifende Verwendbarkeit des Titels unterstreichen. Neben Jazzaufnahmen gibt es Popversionen, eine Soul- und eine Discofassung. Mitchell Ayres and his Fashions in Music (mit Mary Ann Mercer, Gesang; Aufnahmedatum: 08. Februar 1940, also einen Tag nach der Aufnahme von Benny Goodman) erreichten mit ihrer ersten Cover-Version # 18 der Hitparade.
Freddie Rich & Orchestra mit Rosemary Calvin nahmen das Stück am 14. Februar 1940 auf, Harry James & Dick Haymes (im Bostoner Southland Café) am 19. März 1940. Ella Fitzgerald singt ihn mit Dizzy Gillespies Orchester live in der ausverkauften Carnegie Hall am 29. September 1947, ihre erste Plattenversion stammt vom 20. Dezember 1947 mit den Daydreamers. Sie hat den Song über 15 Mal mit ihrem typischen Scat-Gesang aufgenommen. Django Reinhardt nahm ihn mit seinen Improvisationen als Gitarrist der Jazz Club Mystery Hot Band am 25. Januar 1945 in Paris auf.
Lionel Hampton folgte am 02. April 1947, Goodman erneut als Goodman Septet am 07. April 1947, Stan Kentons Instrumentalversion stammt vom 21. Dezember 1947.
Der noch unbekannte Dave Brubeck suchte sich den Song aus, um ihn mit seinem gerade gegründeten Oktett im Jahre 1948 für eine Vorspielprobe bei der NBC zu präsentieren. Duke Ellington (mit Ben Webster) führte ihn live in der Carnegie Hall am 13. November 1948 auf. Das Charlie Parker Quintet verewigte ihn am 18. Dezember 1948, Erroll Garner am 07. Oktober 1950.
Die Fassung des Duos Les Paul/Mary Ford, eine der ersten Overdub-Aufnahmen der Musikgeschichte, blieb neun Wochen auf # 1. Gitarrist Les Paul, der sich auch mit Gitarrenkonstruktion (die Gibson Les Paul ist nach ihm benannt) und Aufnahmetechnik befasste, entwickelte ein Nachhallverfahren (Delay), das auf seiner am 04. Januar 1951 zuhause eingespielten Aufnahme erstmals zu hören ist und seitdem zu den üblichen Soundeffekten der Aufnahmetechnik gehört.
Er legte insgesamt acht identische Tracks mit zeitlicher Verzögerung übereinander, wobei er eine Degeneration der Qualität in Kauf nehmen musste. Pauls Version kam am 23. März 1951 in die Hitparade, wo sie 25 Wochen verweilte. Kein anderes Duett verharrte für 9 Wochen auf dem # 1 der US-Charts. Seine Version erreichte auch als erste Aufnahme eines weißen Interpreten # 1 der Rhythm & Blues-Hitparade. Les Pauls Version verkaufte 1,5 Millionen Exemplare und ist damit die erfolgreichste Version von “How High the Moon“. Sarah Vaughn nahm den Titel zwischen dem 25. und 27. Oktober 1955 auf, Sonny Stitt folgte am 01. August 1958. Eine denkwürdige Aufnahme stammt von Ella Fitzgerald, als sie ihn in der Berliner Deutschlandhalle am 13. Februar 1960 präsentierte (zu finden auf der LP “Ella in Berlin“; 1960), Marvin Gaye brachte im Juni 1961 eine Soulfassung heraus, die Disco-Version von Gloria Gaynor (November 1975) war kein großer Hit für sie.
Die Abfolge der Akkorde bilden das Akkordgerüst für Charlie Parkers Komposition “Ornithology“. Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton und andere übernahmen “Ornithology“ in ihr Solo bei der Interpretation von “How High the Moon“. Miles Davis' Komposition Solar basiert auf Teilen der Akkordstrukturen von “How High the Moon“.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann Ayres für Vokalgruppen wie The Andrews Sisters zu dirigieren. Er begann auch für Columbia Records als musikalischer Leiter zu arbeiten und arbeitete mit Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Pearl Bailey und anderen, die bei dem Plattenlabel unter Vertrag standen, darunter Doris Day und Dinah Shore.
Mitchell Ayres' erste Verbindung mit Perry Como kam 1944, als er gebeten wurde, eine Demoaufnahme einer Radiosendung mit Como als Moderator zu dirigieren.
Das Programm wurde zum “Chesterfield Supper Club“. Ayres und Como teilten die Begeisterung für Golf und spielten oft zusammen. 1948 bot Como Ayres die Stelle als Dirigent seiner “Supper Club“-Sendungen an, während die beiden Golf spielten. Ayres und sein Orchester begannen auch mit Como für RCA Victor aufzunehmen; Comos Aussprache und Phrasierung auf den Aufnahmen von “Kol Nidrei“ und “Eli, Eli“ wurden von einem Mitglied von Ayres' Orchester gelehrt, der der Sohn eines Rabbiners war. Als der “Chesterfield Supper Club“ Ende 1948 ins Fernsehen wechselte, waren Ayres und sein Orchester Teil der Besetzung. Ayres und sein Orchester blieben bei Como in seiner CBS-Fernsehshow und wechselten sowohl für die “Perry Como Show“ als auch für Perry Comos “Kraft Music Hall“ zu NBC. Während sowohl Ayres als auch Como bei CBS arbeiteten, arbeiteten Ayres und sein Orchester auch am Top Tunes-Programm des Fernsehens, das ein Sommerersatz für Comos Fernsehshow war. Sie waren bis 1964 Stammgäste in Comos Programmen.
Im Jahr 1963, nach fast 20 Jahren einer regelmäßig stattfindenden Radio- oder Fernsehsendung, war sich Perry Como nicht sicher, ob er weiterhin regelmäßige Fernsehauftritte haben würde. Seine Unsicherheit veranlasste Ayres, ein Angebot anzunehmen, Dirigent für eine neue Fernsehshow zu werden, “The Hollywood Palace“, die im Januar 1964 uraufgeführt wurde. Für seine musikalische Arbeit an der Show wurde er 1966 und 1968 für einen Emmy Award nominiert. Zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes arbeitete Ayres für die Fernsehsendung.
Ayres wurde am 05. September 1969 beim Überqueren einer Straße in Winchester/Nevada von einem Auto angefahren und getötet. Er war in der Gegend von Las Vegas und arbeitete als musikalischer Leiter für Connie Francis' Show im neu eröffneten Landmark Hotel. Er hinterließ seine Frau Georgianna, einen Sohn, Lawrence, und eine Tochter, Judith. Eine Woche nach dem Tod ihres Mannes starb Georgianna Ayres an einem Herzinfarkt. Ayres und seine Frau sind im Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale begraben.
