Lil Johnson (* 1900; Todesdatum und Geburts- sowie Sterbeort unbekannt) war eine US-amerikanische Bluessängerin, die in den 1920 er und 1930 er Jahren eine Reihe von Dirty Blues und Hokum Songs aufnahm. Über Lil Johnsons Leben ist wenig bekannt.
1929 machten sie erste Aufnahmen in Chicago, begleitet am Klavier von Montana Taylor und Charles Avery bei fünf Songs, darunter “Rock That Thing“. Der Titel “Minor Blues (Mama Blues)“ mit Montana Taylor am Piano blieb unveröffentlicht.

Erst 1935 gab es eine erneute Aufnahmesession; Dabei entstanden unter anderem die Dirty Blues Songs “Get ‛Em from the Peanut Man (Hot Nuts)“, “Anybody Want to Buy My Cabbage?“ und “Press My Button (Ring My Bell)“, in dem es heißt: „Come on baby, let's have some fun / Just put your hot dog in my bun“ (Komm schon, Baby, lass uns ein wenig Spaß haben / steck einfach deinen Hot Dog in meine Semmel).

Von 1935 an war der Blues-Pianist Black Bob Lil Johnsons Partner. Sie nahmen auch eine Version von “Keep A-Knockin’“ als "Fox Trot Song" auf, das später ein Hit für Little Richard wurde.

Während seines erstaunlichen Aufstiegs zum Star besang Little Richard für Specialty etwa drei Dutzend Plattenseiten, von denen viele Rock’n’Roll-Klassiker wurden. “Long Tall Sally“, “Slippin' and Slidin'“, “Rip It Up“, “Ready Teddy“, “The Girl Can't Help It“, “Send Me Some Lovin'“, “Jenny, Jenny“, “Miss Ann“, “Keep A Knockin'“, “Good Golly, Miss Molly“, “Ooh! My Soul“ und “True, Fine Mama“ waren alle Hitlisten-Erfolge und festigten Little Richard in seiner Stellung als einer der führenden Kräfte in der Revolution, die sich der amerikanischen Pop-Musik bemächtigt hatte.

“Keep A-Knockin' (But You Can't Come In)“ ist ein beliebter Song, der im Laufe der Jahre von einer Vielzahl von Musikern aufgenommen wurde. Der Text handelt von einem Liebhaber an der Tür, der nicht eingelassen wird; in manchen Versionen, weil schon jemand anderes da ist, in den meisten anderen aber, weil sich der anklopfende Liebhaber schlecht benommen hat.
Frühe Versionen werden manchmal Perry Bradford und J. Mayo Williams zugeschrieben. Variationen wurden 1928 von James "Boodle It" Wiggins, 1935 von Lil Johnson, 1936 von Milton Brown und 1939 von Louis Jordan aufgenommen.
Ein ähnliches lyrisches Thema taucht in “Open the Door, Richard“ von 1946 auf, allerdings aus der Sicht des Anklopfenden.
Wiggins' Version trug den Titel “Keep Knockin 'An You Can't Get In“, die ungefähr im Februar 1928 in Chicago/Illinois aufgenommen und in diesem Jahr von Paramount Records (12662) veröffentlicht wurde.
Als Little Richard es 1957 als schnellen Rock'n'Roll-Song aufnahm, erreichte “Keep A-Knockin'“ # 2 der US-R&B-Charts und # 8 der US-Pop-Charts. Diese Version wird normalerweise Penniman (Little Richards legaler Name), Williams und Bert Mays zugeschrieben. Little Richard hat das Lied viermal neu aufgenommen, auf den Alben “Little Richard's Greatest Hits“ (1965), “Little Richard Live“ (1976), “Shake It All About“ (1992) und dem Soundtrack zum Film “Why Do Fools Fall in Love“ (1998). ).

Zu weiteren Songs gehört “Buck Naked Blues“ aus den 40 ern. Der Titel blieb unveröffentlicht und liegt nur als privates Acetat vor.
Lil Johnson Gesang war energisch und bisweilen schroff. Alle ihre Songs wurden in späteren Blues-Anthologien aufgenommen. Über ihr weiteres Leben nach 1937 ist nichts bekannt.
