Im Sommer 1942 war er in der Sendung von Meredith Willson zu sehen und ersetzte Fibber McGee und Molly während der Saisonpause.
Robert Reiniger Meredith Willson (* 18. Mai 1902, + 15. Juni 1984) war ein amerikanischer Flötist, Komponist, Dirigent, Musikarrangeur, Bandleader, Dramatiker und Schriftsteller. Er ist vielleicht am besten dafür bekannt, das Buch, die Musik und die Texte für das Broadway-Hit-Musical “The Music Man“ von 1957 und “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas“ (1951) zu schreiben. Willson schrieb drei weitere Musicals, von denen zwei am Broadway erschienen, und komponierte Sinfonien und populäre Lieder. Für seine Filmmusik wurde er zweimal für den Oscar nominiert.

In den restlichen 1940 er Jahren trat er in Nachtclubs auf und trat im Radio auf. Im Dezember 1947 unterschrieb er bei Decca und arbeitete Anfang 1948 mit Walter Gross zusammen.
Walter Gross
(* 14. Juli 1909, +27. November 1967) ist vor allem dafür bekannt, dass er die Musik für das beliebte Lied “Tenderly“ von 1946 komponiert hat. Er komponierte nicht nur Dutzende anderer Titel, sondern war auch als Pianist, Arrangeur, Orchesterleiter und Führungskraft der Plattenindustrie tätig.
Gross wurde in New York City geboren und gab seinen ersten Klavierabend im Alter von 10 Jahren. In den frühen 1930 er Jahren begann er professionell aufzutreten und spielte Klavier in Bands unter der Leitung von Paul Whiteman, Andre Kostelanetz, Tommy Dorsey und Raymond Scott. In den 1930 er Jahren war er außerdem fester Pianist beim CBS-Radio. Nach seinem Militärdienst während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde Gross leitender Angestellter bei Musicraft Records, wo er als Dirigent/Arrangeur/Pianist für Walter Gross und seinem Quartett Aufnahmesitzungen fungierte.
Im Jahr 1946 wandte sich der bekannte Lyriker Jack Lawrence an ihn und bat ihn um Erlaubnis, einer unbenannten Melodie, die Gross komponiert hatte, Worte hinzuzufügen. Zunächst zögerte Gross mit der Zusammenarbeit, und nachdem Lawrence seine fertigen Texte vorgestellt hatte, äußerte Gross seine Unzufriedenheit mit den Texten und dem Titel. Lawrence gelang es schließlich, einen Verleger für das neue Werk zu finden, und kurz darauf wurde es von Sarah Vaughan aufgenommen. Obwohl es ein bescheidener Hit war, war das Lied Vaughans erster Solo-Chart-Erfolg und markierte ihren Übergang von der Jazz-Künstlerin zum beliebten Gesangsstar.
“Tenderly“ fand auch in den nächsten Jahren weiterhin großen Anklang bei Jazz- und Popmusikern. Als die Sängerin Rosemary Clooney es jedoch 1952 für Columbia Records aufnahm, wurde es ein Millionenseller und gelangte in das Repertoire der Pop-Standards. Clooney bemerkte später: „Technisch gesehen ist es die zufriedenstellendste Platte, die ich je gemacht habe.“
“Tenderly“ voted the #2 all-time standard song in Billboard disc jockey poll: Rosemary's recording voted the #8 all-time record.
Im Laufe der Jahre wurde die Komposition von Billie Holiday, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Kenny Burrell, Lionel Hampton, Stan Kenton, Eric Dolphy Vic Damone, Chet Atkins und The Dominoes aufgenommen.
Joan Crawford sang es im Vorspann des Films “Torch Song“ von 1953.
Zu Gross‘ weiteren Kompositionen gehören “Your Love“, “I'm in a Fog About You“, “Mexican Moon“, “How Will I Remember You“ und “Just a Moon Ago“. Zu seinen lyrischen Mitarbeitern gehörten Carl Sigman, Bobby Troup und Ned Washington.
In den frühen 1940 er Jahren nahm er für das Label Bluebird Solo-Klaviersingles auf, darunter seine Originalkompositionen “Creepy Weepy“, “Improvisation in Multiple Keys“ und “A Slight Case of Ivory“. Er nahm auch für die Labels MGM, ABC-Paramount und Royale auf.
Er spielte Klavier für Maxine Sullivan, Alec Wilder (als Mitglied seines Oktetts) und andere und dirigierte Orchester für die Sänger Gordon MacRae, Mel Tormé und Phil Brito.
In den 50er Jahren zog Gross nach Kalifornien und trat gelegentlich in Clubs an der Westküste auf. Er starb 1967 in Los Angeles.
