Backing band for Doc Starkes Sometimes referred to as "The Night Riders". The Nite Riders were: James "Doc" Starkes: Bass /Trombone, Melvin Smith: Vocals / Baritone Saxophone Harry Van Walls: Piano Harry Crafton: Guitar / Vocals Joe Sewell: Tenor Saxophone Jimmy Johnson: Drums Before forming this group, all the members had attended several studio sessions and some of them had also done solo recordings. Van Walls had appeared on numerous Atlantic r'n'b-hits since the late 1940s (Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, Sticks McGhee, Joe Morris, Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters, The Clovers etc.), and Harry Crafton had worked with Doc Bagby, The Jive-Tones, The Sonotones and The Craft Tones. Joe Sewell had recorded with Tiny Grimes' and Harry Crafton's Orchestras, and Melvin Smith with Clyde "Blow Top" Lynn & his House Rockers and Big John Greer.

Harry Crafton (* Philadelphia) war ein US-amerikanischer Rhythm and Blues-Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarrist. Er bleibt vor allem als Songtexter von Jimmy Prestons und Bill Haleys Song “Rock the Joint“ (auch: “We're Gonna Rock This Joint Tonight“) in Erinnerung).

Unter eigenem Namen nahm er von 1949 bis 1954 für Irving Ballens Label Gotham einige Stücke auf, die ihm allerdings keine Hiterfolge einbrachten. Er trat auch unter der Bandbezeichnung The Jivetones und The Craft Tones auf und orientierte sich stilistisch an Künstlern wie "Cleanhead" Vinson und Jimmy Witherspoon.

Bekannte Songs Craftons waren “It's Been a Long Time Baby“, “Rusty Dusty“ und “Guitar Boogie“. Nach seiner Zeit beim Gotham-Label spielte er bei Doc Starke's Niteriders, die für Label wie MGM, Apollo, Teen, Sound und Swan aufnahmen, jedoch ohne großen kommerziellen Erfolg. Nachdem sich die Gruppe in den 1960 er Jahren aufgelöst hatte, verschwand Crafton aus dem Musikgeschäft.
