Cyrus W. “Buddy” Kalb Jr. aka Buddy Kalb aka Big Buddy K aka C.W. Kalb Jr. is a Singer/Songwriter born in Atlanta, GA on July 15 1938. He has spent 40 years writing almost exclusively for Ray Stevens and his Publishing Companies, Ahab Music Corporation Inc., and Ray Stevens Music. Prior to that he wrote for Lowery Music Co. and the Lowery catalog has now been acquired by Sony/ATV Publishing. All of these are BMI Companies and Buddy has been exclusively a BMI Writer his entire career beginning in the 1956. He has written over 600 songs, most having been published and over 175 recorded by various Artists on Major Labels.
Over 130 of his songs have been recorded by Artist/Publisher Ray Stevens who is also a close friend and Music Business Associate. Buddy himself recorded for RCA Victor, VeeJay, Scottie, ABC Paramount and Lowery Records before deciding to give up recording and concentrating on writing and Music Business Consulting. Some of his early recordings are available on YouTube and he is listed in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. He also produced one session and that was with the Atlanta Artist Keith Loren on Mark IV Records. Loren recorded two of Buddy’s songs. Buddy’s own early releases were “Little Black Umbrella” “First Love” “Miss Ponytail” “Good Luck Baltimore” “White Sneakers and Bermuda Shorts” “Lumber City” “New Generation Man” “You’re Young” “She Knows How to Rock” to name a few. While he found local success in various regions of the country he never had that break out Hit that would have established him as a career recording Artist.
His song “Frog Kissin'” was recorded by both George Burns and guitarist Chet Atkins and was a Top 40 Chart record for them and an even bigger Hit in Canada. A song he co-wrote with his wife Carlene and also recorded by his good friend Ray Stevens, “Mississippi Squirrel Revival” won Comedy/Novelty Song of the Year in 1983 and has sold several million audio and video recordings.
Video’s of his songs have received well over 20,000,000 unique YouTube views with many of those songs directed toward political satyr. He is an Author having co-written a Memoir with Ray Stevens titled “Ray Steven’ Nashville” and a Children’s Christmas Book titled “Meanwhile Back at the North Pole” both books are published by Father & Son Publishing of Tallahassee FL. Buddy has co-written and has been featured in numerous Ray Stevens Video Productions including the feature length Music Video Movie “Get Serious.”
He has written a series of stories about a couples travels in Paris and the South of France titled “Their Hearts Home Town” that is available under that tab on this WebSite and a series of stories about Southern Life also tabbed on this site under the title “Robin Gravy.” There is also a songwriting tutorial (Songwriting 101) a listing of many of his Song Lyrics and a collection of Kids Stuff under those tabs on this Site as well.
Under the Tabs Buddy’s Gospel and What God Wants he shares his insights into the Christian life, a journey he has been on since 1966 when at the age of 28 he gave up his musical pursuits for a few years after having a spiritual encounter that changed his life forever.
