Carl Ray is none other than Conatser, the mysterious composer of great tracks for Johnny and The Hurricanes(Reveille Rock, Buckeye, Bamboo). Carl signed with Irving Michanik and Harry Balk in Detroit, owners of 'Twirl Records', as Carl and The Thunders, an instrumental group similar to Johnny and The Hurricanes. 'Buckeye' and 'Bamboo' were intended for his group but when Johnny and The Hurricanes were successful with 'Crossfire' on Warwick Records(US No. 23) attention was focused on their next release. Since Carl was a songwriter under contract, 'Buckeye' was given to Johnny and The Hurricanes. This was initially their next A Side until Paul Tesluk hit some notes on the organ ending up with 'Red River Rock' on Warwick Records resulting in a million-selling A side (US No.5, UK No.3) that is still played constantly today worldwide on radio some 52 years later!
Drafted into the US Army, Conatser fascinated with their Reveille bugle call thought it would make a great R'n'R number and turned into 'Reveille Rock'. Given to Johnny and The Hurricanes it resulted in another smash hit for them.
Once discharged from the Army, he reformed The Thunders into Carl and the Impacts. They played around Detroit and Toledo, and eventually made their way down to Nashville and recorded this 45.
Composer credits on Johnny and The Hurricanes tracks issued internationally often credit him as 'Conaster'.
