Bereits 1929 nahm sie in New York für OKeh einen erste Platten-Titel mit dem Eddie Lang Orchester (“What Kind O’Man Is You“) auf. Eine US-Veröfentlichung ist nicht bekannt.

Von 1936 bis 1942 gründete Norvo ein Swing-Orchester und nahm für ARC auf, zuerst auf ihrem Brunswick-Label, dann Vocalion und Columbia, nachdem CBS ARC gekauft hatte. Die Aufnahmen enthielten Arrangements von Eddie Sauter, oft mit Mildred Bailey als Sängerin. 1938 erreichten Red Norvo and His Orchestra vordere Charts-Ränge mit ihren Aufnahmen von “Please Be Kind“, das zwei Wochen lang # 1 war, und “Says My Heart“, mit Leadgesang von Bailey, das vier Wochen lang in der Pop-Charts war und in der Woche vom 18. Juni 1938 # 1 erreichte.

Als sie später Hoagy Carmichaels Stück “Rockin’ Chair“ nochmals aufgenommen hatte, nun mit The Delta Rhythm Boys als Begleitsänger, und den Song bekannt machte, erhielt sie auch den Beinamen "Rockin’ Chair Lady".
Bailey machte den Song zu ihrer Erkennungsmelodie und wurde "The Rockin’ Chair Lady" genannt. Am 23. März 1937 spielte ihn Bailey erneut mit ihrem Orchester ein; am 12. Juni kam der Song in dieser Version (Vocalion 3553) bis auf # 13 der US-Charts. Danach kam der Song nicht wieder in die US-Charts.
