Kurz-Bio:
Die Pianistin Winifred Atwell wurde am 27. Februar 1914 in Tanapura, Trinidad und Tobago, geboren und verstarb am 28. Februar 1983 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australien. In den frühen Vierzigerjahren ging sie in die USA, um bei dem aus Russland stammenden Pianisten Alexander Borowsky Klavier zu studieren. Etwas später setzte sie ihre Ausbildung zur Konzertpianistin an der Royal Academy of Music in London fort und verdiente sich neben dem Studium als Bar-Pianistin ihren Unterhalt. In den frühen Fünfzigern bot ihr die britische DECCA einen Plattenvertrag an, den sie unterschrieb. Mit ihren Plattenveröffentlichungen war sie sehr erfolgreich und sie war die erste dunkelhäutige Musikerin, die in den britischen Charts einen ersten Platz erreichte. Auf ihren Tourneen kam sie sehr oft auch nach Australien, wo sie seit den Siebzigerjahren auch ihren ständigen Wohnsitz hatte.
