The Pilgrim Travelers gradually fell apart in the 1950s, however, as accidents and drinking caused both Barber and Turner to leave the group. While the group continued to tour and record, adding Lou Rawls in late 1950s, it lost its hitmaking power after leaving Specialty Records in 1956.

Rawls verließ die Gruppe 1960; er kehrte danach zurück, um mit der Gruppe ein weiteres Album aufzunehmen, das jedoch bald von der Szene verschwand. Kurz nachdem Lou Rawls sich von den Travelers getrennt hatte, trat Ben Peters dort ein und war weiterhin ein aktives Mitglied der restlichen Gruppe.
