Die wohl bekanntesten Impressions waren wohl jene, die 1958 in Chicago gegründet wurden. Kurz vorher bildeten Sam Gooden und die Brüder Arthur und Richard Brooks in Chattanooga, Tenneesee, ein Gesangs-Trio, das sie The Roosters nannten und gingen nach Chicago, wo sie sich mit Jerry Butler und Curtis Mayfield zum Quintett erweiterten und sich auf The Impressions umtauften. Als Jerry Butler sie 1960 verließ, wurde er durch Fred Cash ersetzt. Als 1962 auch die Brüder Brooks die Formation verließen, blieb ein Trio über.
