The Gems
The Gems were a Chicago girl group in the 1960s, led by original lead singer Louise Bethune. The group became the primary backup vocal group for Chess Records. The group also featured Minnie Riperton, who also recorded under the name Andrea Davis, who would go on to a career with the Chicago pscych-rock group Rotary Connection before embarking on a solo career highlighted by her hit song "Lovin' You."
The Gems' career began as the Lovettes on Checker. Renamed as The Gems they switched to Chess Records, where they cut 'It's a Girl's Impression' and 'Let Your Hair Down', in 1963. Their most successful record was 'I Can't Help Myself' (1964), which got played outside of greater Chicago, and put them on the road doing promotional tours and concerts. Chess followed with 'Love for Christmas' in November 1964, just in time for holiday buyers. When two final singles, 'He Makes Me Feel Good' (1965) and 'Girls Can Do It' (1967), flopped, they disbanded. 'He Makes Me Feel Good' appears on Where the Girls Are, Vol. 3, Chess Female Singers & Groups.
