The Gemini
One most upsetting incident for Joe Meek occurred in 1965. A new record was sent to him with the ‘A’ side title ‘Space Walk’ and, the most hurtful title of ‘Goodbye Joe’ for the flip side. It appears that it had been recorded at an outside studio by some, if not all, of the original Tornados. It was on Columbia DB 7638 and was issued in 1965. The reasoning behind this must have been the fact that Royalties were not filtering through to members of the band as was the case with many, if not all of Joe’s former recording artists. Nevertheless this was reasoning enough for Joe, after hearing the original tape, to warn the members of the original line-up that, should they ever consider using the name ‘The Tornados’ on this or any subsequent recordings, then certainly a court hearing would be instigated to settle the matter in Joe’s favor. Consequently the band were named ‘The Gemini’. Nevertheless these particular recordings had all the hallmarks of the sound of the Tornados and were produced by the company Sound Venture, which was owned by former Tornados’ lead guitarist Alan Caddy, and ex Joe Meek’s solo singer Don Charles.
