"The Avantis were financed by The Ventures´ manager Josie Wilson and named
after her rhythm-playing son Don´S Studebaker Avanti car.
The band was assembled by Judd Hamilton who brought in brothers
Pat and Lolly Vegas (Vasquez) and arranged this number with its surfboard waxing
(sawing?) effects and the rare appearance of an organ (played by Leon Rusdsel)
on a surf instrumental. It was laid down at United Recorders on Sunset Boulevard
Hollywood and released in August ´63 coupled with Gypsy Surfer on Chancellor.
The following year The Avantis had two singles titled "Surfin´ Granny" and
"Phantom Surfer" issued on Regency, a subsidiary of The Ventures first label Dolton,
and a third "Big Surf" under the name of The Sharks on Sapian.
Pat and Lolly Vegas later played sessions, acted as part of the house band for the Shindig
TV show, and went on o form Redbone with whom they enjoyed several chart entries
in the ´70s incl. The With Queen of New Orleans"."
